[English]

Background and objectives: Mycorrhiza are soil fungi that facilitate plants' access to nutrients through symbiosis with plant roots and the production of a biological system. By increasing productivity, they improve plant establishment and resistance to environmental stresses. Compared to plant roots, mycorrhizal fungal hyphae spread over a wider area of soil, making nutrients available to plants. Fungi enhance plant growth by absorbing minerals from the soil and making plants more resistant to environmental stresses. They act as a biological fertilizer, increasing the activity of soil organisms, and improve soil structure, which leads to better plant growth. This article examines the effects of five mycorrhizal fungi symbiosis with the medicinal plant Lavandula angustifolia on some plant indices and its phytochemical factors.

Materials and methods: The present study was conducted as a completely randomized design with 6 treatments, 5 replications, and a total of 30 pots. The treatments included inoculation of various species of mycorrhizal fungi from the genus Glomus (G. intraradices, G. geosporum, G. mosseae, G. fasciculatum, G. versiform) and controls. At the end of the growing season, some plant indices (plant length, number of lateral branches, number of leaves per branch, leaf length and width, stem diameter, dry weight of aerial organs, and dry weight of roots) and phytochemical factors (content of total phenolic and flavonoid compounds, antioxidant capacity, proline content, as well as photosynthetic pigments including chlorophyll a, b, total chlorophyll, and carotenoids) of Lavandula angustifolia were measured. The data were analyzed using SPSS software (Version 21), and their normality was checked using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. After analysis of variance, mean comparisons were performed using Duncan's test.

Results: The results indicated that most mycorrhizal fungi had a significant effect (p< 0.01)on most of plant indices and phytochemical factors of Lavandula angustifolia. Thus, in plants individuals inoculated with the fungi G. mosseae, G. geosporum, and G. intraradices a significant increase (p< 0.01) in most plant indices was observed. Notably, the mycorrhizal fungi significantly affected traits such as the number of lateral branches, stem diameter, number of leaves per branch, and the dry weight of both roots and aerial parts (p< 0.01). Additionally, inoculation with these fungi had a positive effect on improving the content of phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and antioxidant capacity of the plant. Results from mean comparisons demonstrated the maximum carotenoid content in the treatment using the species G. mosseae (1.85 mg) and the minimum carotenoid content in the control treatment (0.81 mg).

Conclusion: The results indicated that the roots of the Lavandula angustifolia established a symbiotic relationship with most of the mycorrhizal fungi used in this research. As a result, most of the plant indices and phytochemical factors examined in this study demonstrated a significant increase compared to the control treatment. According to the obtained results, the species G. mosseae, G. intraradices, and G. geosporum can provide optimal conditions for the growth and desirable production of the multifunctional lavender plant, making them suitable biofertilizer alternatives to chemical fertilizers. Therefore, based on the findings of the present research and considering the compatibility of mycorrhizae with the environment and various environmental stresses, the use of these fungi to enhance the performance of lavender plants is recommended.
